初日の出 (Hatsuhinode) is the first sunrise of the year. Two years ago I was in Tokyo around new year’s eve. The sun was about to rise when me and my two companions stepped out of the train on our way home after a long night out. As we walked through the train station I noticed that some people around us gathered at a window and admired the sunrise in what could almost be interpreted as a religious act. My friend told me that watching the first sunrise of the year is an important tradition for many Japanese people. Most of you will probably still be sleeping like a (drunk) baby when the sun rises tomorrow though. Happy New Years folks.
